Gaining independence from British rule in 1983, today St Kitts and Nevis is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, in both geographical size and population. It consists of two islands: St Kitts (also more formerly known as St Christopher Island), and Nevis, separated by a two mile wide channel. The total population is about 52,000 people, most of African descent. Indeed, St Kitts and Nevis were amongst the first islands of the Caribbean to be settled by Europeans, earning the country the nomination as the ‘Mother of the West Indies’.

No doubt, a big part of the culture of St Kitts and Nevis is their national sport, cricket. With its influences from the British that influenced many countries in the Caribbean for centuries, the residents are passionate about cricket, as in so many other Commonwealth member countries

Barbados is rightly regarded as one of the world’s premier tourist destinations. It is the only vacation destination in the Hemisphere that boasted a scheduled Concorde service and it is no surprise that many foreign investors and business men who visit Barbados fall in love with the island. They all find a way to become part of this small, but affluent, Caribbean country.

Cricket has been the national pastime of Barbados almost from the beginning of the country’s history, having been introduced to the island by the early English settlers. It is often played in the nation’s streets with homemade bats and taped tennis balls, or on one of the many cricket grounds around the island.

Barbados’ most famous cricket ground is the Kensington Oval located less than a mile from the heart of the capital of Barbados, Bridgetown. This historic and centuries old home to international cricket was transformed and restored in 2007.

Barbados is the home to Sir Garfield Sobers, who is generally regarded as “the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen”. Other cricketing luminaries include Sir Frank Worrell, Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Clyde Walcott, Seymour Nurse, fiery pace bowlers Wes Hall, Charlie Griffith and Malcolm Marshall and opening batsmen Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge who have all put the name of Barbados on the world cricketing map.
