After years of tabloid gossip, country music’s top couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert announced their divorce after four years of marriage on Monday.
“This is not the future we envisioned,” read a statement to the Associated Press. “And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
Lambert and Shelton wed in Texas in May of 2011 after dating for about five years. At the time, Lambert told US Weekly: “I’m married to my best friend! Looking forward to a lifetime of laughter.”
“I wanted to be married to Miranda the day I proposed,” Shelton added. “Finally, it’s official!”
Since then, the couple has gushed about their affection for each other.
“We are really happy and we really laugh about all of (those tabloid rumors),” Lambert told The Tennessean last summer. “When we’re not in work mode, what actually brought us together, which is country music, we don’t bring that home. We’re just normal people doing laundry, going to the grocery store, watching HGTV.”
Before Lambert released her “Platinum” album in 2014, Shelton talked about giving her feedback on the songs. “Platinum” includes “Priscilla,” a song Shelton thought should be the her first single, about how relationships can struggle in the spotlight. The story is through the lens of Lambert’s sympathy for Priscilla Presley over how everyone wanted to be with Elvis Presley.
Written by Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby, and Jimmy Robbins, “Priscilla” was inspired by tabloid reports of divorce and pregnancy that Lambert called “asinine.”
When Hemby asked Lambert how she dealt with it all, the singer replied: “I have to. What else am I going to do? I have to make it work.”
“At this point, there’s no secrets about us,” Shelton said last fall. “In fact, not only is there no secrets about us, there’s also a ton of wrong (stuff) about us. Everything and more is out there about us and it is what it is.”
This spring, the country couple were together at the ACM Awards, which Shelton co-hosted with Luke Bryan.
After the awards show, Lambert said that since their relationship started with them “going their separate ways” on tour, they just made it work when they were apart.
“It’s a different way to live and be in a relationship,” she said. “We make sure that our time together really matters so when we are apart it’s not a big deal because we know when we’re together, we’re really together.”
This was the first marriage for Lambert. Shelton was married to Kaynette Williams from 2003 to 2006.
